Thriving Flower Farming in the Heat of July

As the summer sun beats down and temperatures rise, flower farming in July presents its own set of challenges and rewards. I try to embrace the heat as an opportunity to nurture my blooms and create stunning arrangements that capture the essence of summer.

1. Watering Wisely: In July, hydration is key. My flower gardens receive ample water early in the morning or late in the evening to minimize evaporation and ensure plants remain hydrated throughout the day.

2. Choosing Heat-Tolerant Varieties: Selecting heat-tolerant flowers such as zinnias, sunflowers, and cosmos ensures our gardens remain vibrant and resilient. These varieties thrive in the summer heat, offering bursts of color that defy the sun's intensity.

3. Planting Pumpkins and Sunflowers: Did you know? July is still a great time to plant pumpkins and sunflowers! These hearty plants thrive in the summer heat and will be ready to harvest in the fall, adding seasonal charm to your garden.

4. Celebrating Summer Blooms: Despite the challenges, July brings an abundance of blooms that embody the spirit of summer. From bright yellows and oranges to cool blues and purples, our flower fields are a tapestry of colors that delight the senses and inspire creativity.

Mark your calendars! Our first U-pick event of the season is coming up on August 15th. Join us at The Flower Lady OTR to experience the beauty of freshly harvested flowers firsthand. Here’s the link to book your tickets(s): Cut Flower Workshop with The Civic Garden Center
